That is an awesome map! It looks like our planets are really part of the Imperium now.
But Carthage and Xhorik should be a lot closer, probably both under the same white dot! As it is shown, they are hundreds of starts apart, maybe thousands, an extremely vast distance.
I suppose they could be a little closer, but it's not like they are part of the same solar system, or even neighboring solar systems. I said that the Sector was made up of 8 solar systems and 14 inhabited worlds. To me, that's a nice little chunk of the imperium. I like to think of the imperium on a little bit smaller scale, otherwise the universe is so vast that the actions of any group are truly insignificant. If there are ten thousand inhabited worlds, then what good is 1,000 space marines or epic battles involving two of three worlds. I prefer to have our games actually matter in he grand scheme of the "world" we play in.
Yes, space is daunting. The Milky Way galaxy contains between 100 and 400 billion stars! Those clouds of white on the map are clusters of stars as numerous as the water droplets of a cloud.
And there are estimated to be billions more galaxies outside our own, which is where Tyranids come from.
Correction: I just checked Wikipedia and they think there are 170 billion galaxies!! In the observable universe. That blows my mind. But even if you limit yourself to just the Milky Way, as 40k mostly does, it is still a space so vast that the mind can't come close to comprehending it. 100 light years across. Countless stars and planets. You are right that a Space Marine chapter is a pretty insignificant speck!
Beyond the edge of observable space, beyond a great void between galaxies, is tyranid controlled space. Rather, it's their home world and the millions of planets they've stripped of life. A hive fleet of indescribable scale sent to consume the entire 40K world and all it's races is currently crossing that galactic rift, Without warp travel, tyranids must drift for thousands of years in suspended animation between galaxies and the devastating invasions encountered thus far were merely scouts, probing this galaxy for desirable planets and the level of resistance to be anticipated. One terrible day, the body of the fleet will arrive and sweep away everything is this collection of worlds and move on to it's next victim, swollen with the genetics and bio-mass of all the 40K species.
I have also been checking out "Cool facts about space" videos online. Space is big. Damn big. With new satellites, we've gone further out and discovered more that ever before. The chaos planets aren't that far-fetched. They've discovered a cold star, "burning" at around -100 degrees! Debris flying through space emitting radio waves. A galaxy of over 100 trillion stars. A tiny galaxy of very old stars around 12 billion years old. A neutron star so dense that a teaspoon of it's matter would weigh millions of tons. And it goes on!

I really love having maps. Good idea.
