49th Boros Regiment - The Princess Qwana of Boros' Grenadiers

The Boros System is a binary planetary system within the Segmentum Obscurus which lies near the Eye of Terror, with a population of around 400 billion citizens inhabiting 17 planets with another 12 uninhabited It is most noteworthy for containing a plethora of wormholes into the Warp known as the Boros Gate. To defend the Gate, the planets of the system maintain large and highly capable military forces, including hundreds of regiments of Imperial Guard (the exact number is always fluctuating as regiments are destroyed and reformed) and countless divisions of Planetary Defense Forces. During periods of relative calm around the Gate, regiments from the system are called to travel to the farthest reaches of the Imperium to serve against mankind's enemies.

The 49th Boros Infantry Regiment was re-established in 666.M41 by combining eight companies of Planetary Defense Force militia on Boros Secundus into a formal Imperial Guard regiment under the command of Colonel Exerd Trelan. The previous iteration of the 49th had been reduced below effective combat strength and disbanded to plug holes in other regiments in 139.M41 after sustaining nearly 80% casualties in the 12th Black Crusade during what was later termed The Gothic Wars. The human population of Boros Secundus is physically small by the standard of the Imperium as a whole, with most men being between 5'4" and 5'8" with the average for women a few inches shorter. But their proximity to a major Chaos invasion point has made the population hardy, disciplined, and skilled in the arts of war. It is common for men and women to serve in frontline combat roles side by side with approximately 20-30% of the fighting force made up of females.

At the time of the Rynn's World Incident in 989.M41, the regiment had been back in its current iteration for 323 years of continuous service, during which it had fought in countless warzones, from defending the Boros Gate against Chaos incursions to participating in a crusade of reconquest of planets temporarily lost to the orks. In one notable action in 901.M41, the 49th was assigned to Boros Prime during the largest Chaos invasion in a generation. They were defending the royal residence against swarms of daemons being summoned by Thousand Sons traitor space marines and found themselves as the last line of resistance between the hellspawn and the Princess Qwana's personal chambers. Although they suffered over half their number killed, wounded or driven mad, they held the line until the invaders were eventually pushed back by White Consul space marines. The young princess was so grateful that she insisted the regiment be rebuilt rather than disbanded and demanded they become "her" official regiment. From that day on, they have been known as the Princess Qwana of Boros' Grenadiers.

The 49th is a heavily armed and armored Grenadier regiment that also benefits from the favor of the royal household of Boros. Even though Princess (she never ascended to Queen) Qwana has been dead for nearly 10 years, her daughters continue the sponsorship of the regiment in their mother's name, which ensures access to the best equipment. Thus, the regiment is clad head to toe in carapace armor and is equipped with Rhodin pattern lascarbines, commonly held to be among the best standard issue lasweapons in the Imperial Guard arsenal. The most notable benefit they achieve from their royal connection is the use of OGRE class mech suits, which enable their occupant to wield heavy ripper guns and engage in melee with foes that would overwhelm a guardsman. Thus, the regiment favors large infantry platoons fighting on foot supported by OGREs and armored vehicles.

Princess Qwana's 49th Boros Grenadiers Regiment was sent to Badlanding in 988 to bolster the meagre defenses of the vulnerable system on the edge of the Charadon ork empire ruled by Snagrod the Arch-Arsonist. While assigned to the arid world, the regiment uses brown fatigues and bone-colored carapace armor while keeping their distinctive orange regimental marking.

They are due to spend two years on Badlanding before hazarding the Warp journey back to their home system.
